DIBELS Parent Information

California state law requires K-2 students to take universal reading screeners in order to identify reading strengths and potential difficulties early, when support is most effective.  Universal screening means all students in grades K-2 need to be screened.  A reading screener is a brief, age-appropriate assessment that checks key foundational reading skills such as letter knowledge, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. It is not a test students pass or fail and it does not diagnose a learning disability. Instead, the screener provides teachers with early information to guide instruction, monitor progress, and ensure that students who need additional support receive it as soon as possible.

Understanding Your Child's Score Report

Each family is sent a communication via ParentSquare that explains what universal screeners are administered in your child’s grade level, as well as how to read the Home Connect score report. Please see the links below to view the communication specific to your child.

DIBELS Home Connect Website for Families

This site provides resources for families to practice and reinforce important literacy skills with their children. The activities are organized into specific areas of focus (Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Accurate and Fluent Reading, and Reading Comprehension). Please use your child’s Home Connect score report to determine the areas in which they need more support.
