 WCSD Volunteer Practices

Updated June 2026

Thank you for your interest in volunteering in Walnut Creek School District schools. Our strong partnerships with families and the community are essential to student success, and we sincerely appreciate the time and support our volunteers provide.

Recent changes to California law, including Senate Bill 848, have established new safety requirements for certain school volunteers, including annual mandated reporter training and additional screening requirements based on the nature of a volunteer's role. In response, the District has updated its volunteer procedures to ensure compliance with state law while continuing to provide safe and welcoming learning environments for all students. We recognize that these changes represent a new process for many families and are committed to supporting our parent community by providing clear guidance, training resources, and assistance throughout the volunteer clearance process.

To ensure a safe learning environment for all students, every volunteer must complete the District's volunteer clearance process before participating in school activities. Walnut Creek School District has established two levels of volunteer clearance based on the type of volunteer activities you plan to perform. Please review the descriptions below and select the level that best matches your anticipated volunteer role. If your responsibilities change during the school year, you may request to upgrade your clearance at any time.

Visitor/Participant: No Clearance Requirements - Examples of visitors below:

  • Attends a musical, drama, athletic, art or academic event or assembly as a member of the audience
  • Attends a Parent Faculty Club (PFC)/Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting
  • Attends school events at which parents are expected to supervise their own children (examples: Family Movie Night, Open House)
  • Visits the school office for business

  • Attends an IEP or 504 meeting
  • Presents at a Career Fair

Level 1: Volunteer Under Staff Supervision (Does Not Include Driving Clearance)

Level 1 volunteers work directly with students while under the continuous supervision of a District staff member. This clearance is appropriate for volunteers who:

  • Assist in classrooms and instructional activities.
  • Help with classroom celebrations, school events, or other campus activities.
  • Participate in volunteer opportunities where a District employee is present and supervising students at all times.
  • Do not transport students.

Level 1 Requirements:

  • Complete the District volunteer training.
  • Provide current Tuberculosis (TB) clearance.
  • Complete Mandated Reporter Training annually.

Level 2: Volunteer Outside of Staff Supervision (Includes Driving Clearance)

Level 2 volunteers may supervise students without the continuous presence of a District staff member and may serve as approved volunteer drivers for school activities. Examples of Level 2 volunteer opportunities include:

  • Lunch duty supervision.
  • Day field trip chaperones.
  • Overnight field trip chaperones.
  • Approved volunteer drivers for school-sponsored field trips.

Level 2 volunteers must meet all Level 1 requirements and complete the following additional requirements:

  • Complete a Live Scan fingerprint background check and receive District clearance.
  • Submit a valid California driver's license if driving.
  • Provide proof of current automobile insurance that meets District requirements.
