    Homework Packets

Students should spend between 30 to 60 minutes each night on their homework, not including reading. Weekly packets are handed out each Friday and are not due until the following Friday. On the front cover of the packet is a suggested schedule to space out their assignments, however students do not need to follow the schedule exactly. As long as they complete the entire packet by Friday morning the order in which they do the work does not matter.

    Spelling Homework
Spelling is due daily! Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday they select the assignment they want to complete from their homework folders. On Thursday they must take a pre-test and write any word they missed 5 times. The pre-test needs to be turned in Friday morning. Spelling words are on the homework cover page. All assignment options and spelling words are also posted weekly on our classroom website under Spelling Homework.
    Reading Journals

Part of the students' weekly homework is to read a book at their Lexile level and respond to their reading in their reading journals. The entire process, reading and answering questions, should still take 2 hours each week. Students need to answer 2 different questions each week and turn their reading journals in to me every Friday. They have a 299 point Lexile range: at their level and up to 300 points above their Lexile score. For example, if your child's Lexile score is 620, they can read any book in the 600's, 700's, 800's or 900's. Students are welcome to borrow any of our classroom library books, which are already Lexiled, or they can Lexile their own books using the website http://www.lexile.com. Students may also use their Fountas & Pinnell level to help them find a just write book.  Students need to be reading high interest, engaging books that they are able to read independently.  Levels are in place to help them find a book that is in their "just right" range, but is should not prevent them from reading a book they are interested in, if they can access the text.

    Friday Folders
I will be sending home their completed work and any paperwork for parents home in blue Friday Folders. Please take the items out of the folder and send an empty folder back to school with your child on Monday. This will be an additional way for us to communicate. We will still have Wednesday Envelopes for the majority of the School and District communication and paperwork.
