Mrs. Kristine Shargel - Spanish 1A Teacher

Enjoying a hike with my husband near Truckee.

I was born in Walnut Creek.  I was raised in Moraga.  I attended Moraga schools and then Miramonte High School.  I fell in love with Spanish as a 7th and 8th grader at Joaquin Moraga middle school.  I took Spanish and French in high school.  I attended U.C. Davis and majored in Spanish.  I spent the summer of 1996 in Granada, Spain and visited many major cities in Spain.  As the daughter of an American Airlines pilot, I have had many adventuresome travels throughout my life.  I love to travel, meet new people and learn their language, culture and customs.  I have traveled to Mexico 8 times (6 to build houses for people in need), one trip to the Baja Language school in Ensenada, Baja Mexico and one recent trip to La Paz in Baja California for a week.  I take joy in learning about all Spanish speaking countries through many friends from Costa Rica, Uruguay, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador, etc.  I hope to travel to more countries in the future.

I got my teaching credential in Spanish from Sacramento State in 1999.  I taught high school Spanish for four years at Miramonte High School in Orinda (1999-2003).  I took time off to raise my four sons (now ages 14, 12, 10, and 8).  I love teaching here at WCI.  The students and parents are truly wonderful!  I have enjoyed challenging my students to learn new concepts in the Spanish language and I know there have been many moments where students found learning Spanish to be enjoyable.  I am very fortunate to work alongside my amazing colleague, Angie Stewart.  She and I work very well together and she inspires me daily to be the best teacher I can be.

Our family loves Walnut Creek. We love the town, the schools, the parks and open space.  We love the libraries, restaurants, shopping and recreational activities.

This year, I am really looking forward to getting to know your son or daughter.  It is my goal each day to provide a physically and emotionally safe environment where my students feel they can learn and enjoy the Spanish language.
